Nations and Regions East

EEDA is working with other regional and local partners to take advantage of the opportunities arising from the 2012 Games for the economy and people of the region.

With partners' support, the Olympics can help to:

  • raise the region's national and international profile
  • grow the visitor economy
  • secure Olympics-related contracts for businesses
  • increase opportunities for people to get involved in sport and culture.
  • enhance the region's cultural and sporting facilities.

A regional economic impact study commissioned by EEDA and other partners has estimated that the economic benefit to the region from the Olympics could be as high as £600 million.

The 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games will be staged on our doorstep, The East of England will be hosting two events - mountain biking in Essex and white water canoe slalom in Hertfordshire. The overall goal is to reach everyone - using the games as a catalyst to help people achieve personal benefits through culture, sport, skills, work and volunteering. Regional businesses can also take advantage of the huge procurement opportunities available. We are building a powerful and positive legacy, so that work from the Games will continue to deliver benefits long after 2012.

The Nations and Regions East (NRE) partnership is our leading delivery partner and is responsible for maximising benefits from the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. NRE is part of the London 2012 organising committee (LOCOG) official Nations and Regions Group. Councillor Stephen Castle is chairman of NRE.

The Nations and Regions East business plan provides information on the strategy in place to help the East of England benefit from the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. You can download the document here.

To help maximise the benefits from the Games, county groups and theme-specific working groups have also been set up.
