StartUp Britain is a ground-breaking response from the private sector to the Government's call for an 'enterprise-led' recovery. It will deliver the very best in support and advice for start-up companies, led by entrepreneurs for entrepreneurs. It is estimated that the scheme will deliver over £1,500 in value for every start-up company in Britain.

The SfB portfolio has been updated to improve access to strategic advice, helping companies reach international markets and in supporting innovation. The new portfolio contains 13 products focused on helping businesses meet their aspirations to grow and improve business performance.

Will Pope, chair of EEDA, welcomed the announcement in the Budget that over £70 million of public sector funds are coming to the region. The Babraham Institute will receive £44 million and Norwich Research Park will receive £26 million. The investment will support the commercialisation of research, accommodation for innovative small businesses and new research capabilities.

Norwich Research Park Innovation Centre has opened following a £5 million investment in facilities which will help create 5,000 jobs. EEDA funded £1.4 million towards the Centre which has over 30 new office and laboratory units and will attract businesses working in science and science-related disciplines looking to grow in a world class science cluster.

The deadline for expressions of interests for bidding round 14 of the European Regional Development Fund is 29 April. In addition, there is an open call for projects relating to “superfast broadband” with up to £5 million allocated with a deadline of 27 May 2011. Work has started on the £770,000 expansion of South Fens Business Centre in Chatteris. The expansion will accommodate four new business units to support local businesses and help attract new companies to the area. Of the £770,000 invested, £220,000 was invested by EEDA, £350,000 by Fenland District Council and £200,000 by Cambridgeshire County Council.

Six of the eight finalists in the East of England Energy Group Energy Innovation Awards 2011 were boosted by a helping hand from EEDA. Among them was winner, Scour Prevention Systems, for its innovative scour prevention system which will be given commercial trials by international energy giant E.ON.
