How can we deliver the ‘Big Society’ Sustainably?

22 September 2010

Sustainability East and Business in the Community are hosting this event which aims to address issues and identify opportunities to take forward the 'Big Society' in the East of England.

The Government’s plan to promote a ‘Big Society’ is an important initiative; inspirational local leadership and community action are essential if we are to live sustainably within environmental limits. We have the chance for the state, business and people to work together to make public services more efficient, and equip communities better to sustain prosperity for generations to come. However, there are issues to address in plans for the ‘Big Society’, for example:

  • How do we ensure that decisions meet sustainable development objectives in the long-term?
  • How do we ensure that “eco-systems services” on which health and life depend are adequately protected?
  • How do we make sure that everyone – regardless of background or circumstance – gets a fair chance to participate or benefit?
  • Where should businesses focus their input to the ‘Big Society’?
  • How do we ensure that public spending cuts do not derail ‘Big Society’s' gains?

This free event will help address issues and identify opportunities to take forward the ‘Big Society’ in the East of England. The results of the discussion will help inform a shared ‘manifesto’ to help decision makers implement the concept in a way that contributes to sustainable development.

The event is aimed at local authority leaders and officers, public servants, social enterprises, community leaders, businesses and business representatives.
