Innovative action plan for region published
9 March 2010
An innovative action plan which sets out how the region can create enough homes and jobs in the future, while protecting the environment and reducing carbon emissions, has been published today.
The East of England Implementation Plan, a UK first, has been led by the East of England Development Agency (EEDA), the East of England Regional Assembly (EERA) and the Government Office for the East of England.
The implementation plan sets out how the region will deliver the long-term vision and targets in the regional economic and spatial strategies which were published in 2008.
It has been developed over the last year through consultation with a wide range of stakeholders in the public, private and third sectors.
The plan creates a common framework for the alignment of national, regional and local investment and sets out compelling evidence to accelerate the funding and delivery of key schemes. It also takes into account the immediate need to help businesses in the region during the tougher economic climate.
Richard Ellis, chair of EEDA said:
“The region will need to overcome many challenges in the future, from improving our transport infrastructure to building the skills level of our workforce, to addressing the supply and affordability of housing and tackling climate change.
“This implementation plan demonstrates how we are working together to improve the economy of the region in a challenging environment. In tight fiscal times the need to align the funding and activities of partners against commonly shared priorities is greater than ever.”
Cllr John Reynolds, EERA chairman said:
“This implementation plan is about central and local government working together to deliver a better quality of life for the people of the East of England.
“It is a ground-breaking initiative and the East of England is the first region to have spelt out so clearly how it wants to progress over the coming years.”
The implementation plan will be a working document updated accordingly to take account of changing economic and policy environments. It will be owned and guided by the Regional Strategy Board, made up of EEDA, the new East of England Local Government Association (EELGA) and regional partners, from April 2010.
